THE COMPANY
Maydena Sands Pty. Ltd. is a privately owned and funded resource company based in Victoria, Australia. Its current primary focus is on high quality silica raw materials, including silica flour, silica sand and silica rock.
Its main activities, consisting of two projects, are located in south central Tasmania, approximately 90 km by road west of Hobart, near the township of Maydena.
Project location and infrastructure is excellent.
THE MAYDENA SILICA FLOUR PROJECT
Last Updated on Thursday, 01 July 2010 18:38
This project is in the pre-production stages. Our aim is to export high purity silica flour, primarily for the production of TFT-LCD substrates and other applications in the specialist niche of technical and other high purity glass. The drill indicated resource is sufficient to support a +20 year operation, generating 25,000 – 50,000 tonnes per annum of saleable product from processed, naturally occurring silica flour in the +35 to 250 micron size band. Much of the coarser oversize material is friable and can be readily ground down to flour at low cost, providing an opportunity to extend the life of the operation well beyond the 20-year horizon. The +100 to 600 micron size fraction of this coarser material is of a high quality, making it suitable for the production of solar cell cover glass and other PV applications.
THE MAYDENA SILICA ROCK PROJECT
Last Updated on Thursday, 01 July 2010 11:51
The project, driven by the growing demand for high purity silicon, is in the early stages of investigation and evaluation. Its purpose is to identify and supply high quality silica rock feed for the production of high purity polysilicon, mainly for the PV industry. It is based on the coarse silica rock lump material contained in the silica sand and on the silica bedrock underlying it. Initial sampling of surface material, recently completed, gave encouragingly low values for alumina, iron, titanium, chromium, phosphorus and others which compare well with the quality of feed used by other silicon smelters. This lump material would accumulate as a by-product of silica flour production.
The quality and quantity of the silica bedrock resource below the sand remains to be proved by drilling in order to determine if a stand-alone operation based on a silica bedrock resource is feasible.
